During the ALIVE (Activity Based Learning Focused Interactive Lessons Varied Instruction Engaged Learners) course I’m co-facilitating with Elizabeth Barwick, we had participants read about the 4C’s, which are part of the 21st Century Competencies and include Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Communication. The articles about the 4C’s we used are found at nea.org. For the first part of the learning experience, participants read one of the articles, and then worked with a small group to present the information to the larger group. Each group used a different approach to teach the concept to others.
The Communication group had a hands-on activity to show us how important oral communication is in real life. Participants paired up with a colleague, sat back-to-back, and each pair decided who would be A and who would be B. Partner A drew a simple picture, in about 30 seconds. Over the next few minutes, partner A described their picture, without saying what the picture actually was, to partner B, while partner B drew from the instructions. For example, partner A told her partner to draw a circle, then a straight line coming out of the bottom of the circle to the bottom of the page.
This activity was very useful to demonstrate how important communication is, and it allowed the article to come alive for participants.
