Voice Levels

My school is currently working with a district psychologist, Karen Bailey, to learn about the CHAMPS philosophy and framework. (To see more about CHAMPS, click here.) Using the CHAMPS framework, teachers picked an activity or transition that they wanted to explore more deeply, and teach their students the full expectations for that activity. An example of an activity may be silent reading, whole group, partner work, etc.

Today we discussed Communication (the C of CHAMPS), and voice levels. Amanda Jackson (2nd grade teacher) and Amy Garcia (special education teacher) both use a system for voice control that they found on pinterest. I saw this in action a couple days ago, in the 2nd grade classroom, during center time. The students were spy talking, and doing a wonderful job of it! Here is a photo of what the chart looks like:

  1. We have been using some of the Champs way of talking in the classroom. When students are allowed to talk quietly we use the term “Spy Talk”. This has been a fun way to teach volume control.
