Get reading conversation going between teachers, and between teachersand students

During our visit to Whitehall Elementary in Anderson 5, we saw that each classroom had a sign hanging outside their room that stated what the teacher is reading at home. I thought this was an excellent way for students to see that teachers are life-long readers and learners. Not long ago, I borrowed Whitehall's idea and created a sign to post outside every teacher's classroom (pictured below). I also included the teacher assistants, secretaries and administration. I put the paper inside of a page protector, so that participants can use a dry erase marker to state what book they're reading. I know some colleagues who read a book a week, so I wanted them to be able to easily change the information.

One teacher told me that a student, whom she had never met, told her that she is reading the same exact book as the teacher! The student was so excited! I have also overheard conversations between teachers about what they are reading. I, personally, have had several conversations with teachers about the books they have listed.

I really believe this small and easily implementable activity has helped instill a culture of reading at my school. Try it!
