Everyone knows the day before Spring Break can be a bit frustrating for teachers. Not only are the students ready for a vacation, but so is everyone on staff! This year proved to be an even more needed break since two planning days were taken to be used as snow make-up days. We haven't had a break in a while, and the day before a long-anticipated break can be... challenging.
A third grade teacher at my school, Linda Wade, proved to have an excellent idea to help students maintain focus on such a crazy day. She invited parents to come into the classroom toward the end of the day, and talk about their culture with the class. They also brought snacks with them; something that represented their culture. Parents brought special Puerto Rican cookies, eggrolls, and more. I brought matzoh, and talked to the students about my Jewish upbringing. Each parent and child got in front of the class and spoke about their culture. It was a wonderful speaking and listening activity, as well as a sharing of who we are.
Students had to stay focused for the event since they had jobs to do. For example, some students were greeters, some helped to create a welcome sign, one provided an introduction to the festivities. Talk about teamwork!
This event required minimal preparation, and provided a wonderful activity for the last day before a vacation. Good thinking Mrs. Wade!

Thank you for taking the time to come and thank you for sharing with my class. It was one of my favorite days of the year. I plan on doing it again this year.
