SCIRA Administrator of the Year 2014- Mrs. Bernice Jackson

Bernice Jackson, of Brook Glenn Elementary, won the 2014 SCIRA Administrator of the Year Award for her support of reading and literacy.   Mrs. Jackson was nominated for this award by her school  in Greenville County, and competed against other highly qualified administrators in the district.  Mrs. Jackson was unaware that she was even nominated!  She was quite surprised, and humbled, when she received the email that she won Administrator of the Year for Greenville County.

This award by SCIRA looks specifically for exemplary action by the administrator in the areas of motivating children, encouraging literacy, coordinating professional development for teachers, knowledge of the literacy process, and innovation.  Mrs. Jackson's nomination stated that she ensures that literacy is encouraged throughout the school with funding of various reading materials, including a grant she helped write in order to receive benchmarking materials for teachers to use.  Mrs. Jackson also works with teachers to interpret the data from these benchmarks, and helps make instructional determinations.  Every staff member at her school was gifted with a membership to the local council of IRA, and Mrs. Jackson continues to fund an array of reading initiatives.  Students are highly motivated to read because Mrs. Jackson models this behavior on the morning announcements and in classrooms, and encourages book talks in school and at the local Barnes and Noble.  Teachers at Brook Glenn receive a multitude of opportunities to grow as professionals, and Mrs. Jackson is a hands-on learner through these professional developments as well.  As a lifelong learner, Mrs. Jackson is constantly modeling and participating in activities to improve her knowledge base, and she shares her insight with colleagues at all levels.

Everyone congratulates Mrs. Bernice Jackson in being named SCIRA Administrator of the Year!   A love for reading is contagious, and the devotion to the area of literacy is to be commended.  Thank you for all you do for teachers and students Mrs. Jackson!
