A colleague of mine, Amy Garcia, invited me to see a lesson she created using storytelling as an activating strategy with her group of students. The effect was wonderful student writing and storytelling!
First, Mrs. Garcia started with a folded piece of paper. She told the students a story, paper and scissors in hand. As she told the story, she cut pieces away from the paper. The students were completely focused on what she was saying and creating. At the end, the paper turned into a turkey! Students then wrote their own stories, and created a paper figure to go along with it. Brilliant Amy!
